Sonja Quintero is an artist from Texas, US. He says that that he’s first and foremost an artist and always have been. As a child, Quintero drew cartoon characters, and as a teenager, he designed logos, and as an adult he studied interior design. He has since turned his sights to photography. His work leans towards the static, the structural and the oft times melancholy and dark. However, he finds a sense of humor and a touch of mankind in every image he takes and he hopes his viewers do too. Quintero is the proud owner of Squint Photography through which he produces and distributes his art. He says that it is our everyday world that has him fascinated. He can see beauty in the most ordinary of things. Quintero has always found the question, "what is art?” quite ridiculous. To him, the definition of art is simple, really. He says that everything that is created is art.
It’s him, it’s all humans, it's that number 2 pencil, it’s the paint - everything. He adds that art surrounds us everywhere. It is so much more than what hangs on the wall. All we need to do is to identify and embrace it, open our eyes and see its true beauty. Nowadays, most of his work is digital but every now and then he can still be found making magic in the darkroom. Quintero picked up his first camera, Nikon SLR, in 2005 and instantly fell head-over-heels in love with the black-and-white darkroom and film. He says that there’s something magical about the way an image is created as it swims in the developer.
