Nozeman (Born 1721 – Died 1786) was born in Amsterdam. He was a clergyman, an apothecary and a visual artist. He continued an interest in ornithology which was a native Dutch tradition of production. This is what he used in his first creation of the detailed description of the birds of Holland. Unfortunately, he died before completing the work and Houttuyn Martinus finished the production. Several works by Nozeman have been sold at auction. Nozeman was the son of Jacobus Nozeman, the composer. He was trained as a preacher and he served from 1744 to 1749 in Alkmaar where he was called. It’s here that he began to conduct scientific experiments during his free time. He was called to serve in Haarlem In 1749, and he became a supporter of the founding of the Holland Society of Sciences. As a child, Nozeman loved everything about art.
He enjoyed the entire process of making something beautiful and it didn’t matter to him whether he made mistakes along the way because in the end everything turned out better than what he had anticipated. It was while he was in Rotterdam that Nozeman began to prepare for his famous work on “Birds of the Netherlands,” the work that was published by Christiaan Sepp in bits starting in 1770. His work continue to attract new clients, more so the bird lovers. Most people like to purchase framed Nozeman art because they come ready to hang. In 1767 the newly formed Society of Dutch Literature awarded him an honorary membership, and in 1769 he became one of the founders of the Batavian Society for Experimental Philosophy in Rotterdam.
