Maria Mendez is a self taught artist who was born in the early 70s. She was born and brought up on one of the smaller islands of the Caribbean. She began collecting natural specimens including corals, ferns leaves and flowers at a very young age. That’s how her interest in art developed. As years went by, Maria decided to establish a business designing and creating attractive presentations of the natural objects she was collecting and selling them to visitors to the island and to those who were building houses in the Caribbean and beyond. Maria creates her artwork from observation. Her goal is to portray a sense of beauty, strength, and balance through her prints, posters and art. She also plays with color to balance each composition and add to it some beauty and warmth. Each of her pieces contains groups of simple objects that are arranged in various compositions playing on the balance and weight of each element. Her images evoke a sense of a contemplative mood, tranquility, and timelessness. It is through this combination of compositional elements and materials that she strives for strength, beauty and balance.
Maria enjoys a very intimate creative process where she handles and manipulates the materials in a creative way. It is this creativity with her medium that allows her to create pieces that represent her intentions most accurately. Her work has been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions, both within and outside Caribbean. Many of her works have appeared in several permanent corporate collections. Maria is married with two children.
