Born and raised in South Africa, Angela Maritz immigrated to New Zealand in 2007. Currently, she lives in Tauranga, where she resides with her husband and son. Angela experiments with acrylic, and takes a playful journey, creating masterful plains of color, just like she’s building a puzzle. At the same time each tiny stroke, or little piece, is formulating her unique style. She’s being driven by feeling and a rather more compulsive need to paint. Color inspires her paintings or series, pieced together by pattern applications that look like blocks. Painting is Angela’s vehicle, but the expression is her journey. She says this is not an ordinary experience, but a complex image-capturing journey through imagination and the lens of her camera - almost like momentary images of architecture.
Absorbing nature and plains of color, and paging through books trigger her mind, while music stimulates her on the creative process while she’s painting. Her broad genre of work is includes abstract landscapes, floral studies, portraits and wildlife. Many of her paintings are inspired from within, a vivid imagination of loose approximations, laid down on canvas whilst she embraces her musical senses in a delicate balance between environment, motion and person. She believes she was born to be an artist, and even her earliest memories revolve around an almost obsessive need to create, using any medium that allowed her passion as a child to manifest in the expressions of the world around her which she found so enthralling. That enthrallment has never gone away, and now she’s working as a full time artist, but still experiments with her medium.
