Casey Matthews is a native of San Antonio, Texas, but she has considered the Southeast her home for more than 2 decades. She has been painting professionally since 1998. She studied Art and Art History at the University of Alabama and Texas Christian University. She approaches her subjects with light-hearted enthusiasm and she delivers them with singular style and verve. Casey’s current body of work is primarily abstract painting done in mixed-media. Her works explore a constant discourse between the non-objective and the intuitive. Her main objective is to create layers of information through a style that utilizes strata of media. Each of her paintings begins with collage that is manipulated with solvent and then torn until a composition emerges. She gathers inspiration from life, and then translates it into her terms. Her painting process is a combination of medium, layered acrylic paint, charcoal, tissue, oil sticks and handmade paper on canvas.
She incorporates simple vine charcoal drawings between layers until she gets a rich texture. Casey embraces the splatters and drips that develop along the way as she paints; at times the artistic elements lend themselves to an unfinished journey. Casey is interested in energy, structure, color, mood, and the lasting relationships among them. Her works combine observation, emotional content, reinvention, exploration, and technique. It is a form of contradiction and vague communication. It is her intention to create rich surfaces that are visually fascinating with organic shapes and expressive colors, leading the mind of the eye on a visual journey throughout the emotional process of destruction and transformation.
