Paolo Uccello Wall Art

Paolo Uccello (1397 – 1475) was born in Pratovecchio. He was an Italian mathematician and painter who was notable for his pioneering work on visual perspective in art. He loved art from his childhood and the name Uccello came from his love for painting birds. He was obsessed by his interest in perspective and would spend several hours staying late in the night in his study trying to grasp the exact vanishing point. He was interested in perspective because he used it in order to create a feeling of depth in his paintings and not to narrate succeeding or different stories as his contemporaries. Uccello’s best known works are the 3 paintings he did to represent the battle of San Romano. He worked in the Late Gothic tradition. His emphasis was on color and pageantry rather than the Classical realism that his fellow artists were pioneering.

Many have described his style as idiosyncratic, and Uccello left no school of followers. However, the artist has had some influence on 20th-century literary criticism and art. He was apprenticed to Lorenzo Ghiberti, the famous sculptor at the age of ten. Lorenzo was the designer of the Florence Baptistery’s doors. His workshop was the premier center for Florentine art at the time. His sculptural composition and narrative, late-Gothic style greatly influenced Uccello. It was also around this time that he began his friendship with Donatello. Around 1420s, the artist left Ghiberti's workshop but he stayed on good terms with his master. Today, his art is much sought after by many collectors.
