George Henry Andrews (Born 1816) was born in Lambeth, England. He was educated to be an engineer in his early life. By the age of 24 he was already an active book illustrator, and by the age of 31 was on the artistic staff of the Illustrated London News. Andrews accompanied Richard W.H. Howard-Vyse in 1837 on an archaeological expedition to Egypt. While there he served as an illustrator and engineer for Howard-Vyse's 3-volume Operations Carried on at the Pyramids of Gizeh. Andrews’ work was also featured in The Crystal Palace. Apart from being a professional engineer, Andrews was also an illustrator, marine painter, and watercolorist. He began exhibiting in 1840 and in 1856 he was elected a member of the Old Watercolor Society. Later he became the Royal Navy Artist and in 1860, at the peak of his career, he accompanied the Prince of Wales on a tour of Canada - the Prince of Wales became Edward VII.
Andrews did a large-format watercolor showing the prince’s ship entering the City of Quebec. This piece surfaced in a collection in Eastern Canada. It is estimated to be worth between $200,000 and $300,000, and was eventually sold and is now in a permanent collection in Canada. Langmann says: “You can’t really put a value on something like this — it is absolutely priceless.” Langmann’s gallery specializes in North American and European paintings from the 18th century to early 20th centuries. He adds that “there is nothing else like it - to have this kind of watercolor of a Canadian scene from the 1860s.”
