Australian Art

Australian art is any creative work that was made by and for Australians. This includes native Aboriginal artwork, as well as works that were created by Europeans after colonization in the late 1800's. For people who admire the 'Land Down Under', there are many contemporary artists who have photographed and painted pictures of the beautiful landscapes Australia offers. Common subjects of this art form include the historic Sydney Opera House, the Harbor Bridge, and the Great Barrier Roof.

Also photography of the native Aborigine's is quite popular, especially for people who are interested in unique cultures.

Aboriginal art is the 'original' art of Australia and contains advanced tribal artworks. Although these artworks are simple, advanced art techniques have transformed these paintings into a sophisticated genre of their own in the Australian art world, while still staying true to the original spirit of the work their ancestors drew in ancient times.

Early colonial art was introduced when Europeans first began to form colonies in Australia during 1770. Most of these paintings depicted the natural history of the then unfamiliar continent. The artists primarily used European techniques to create representations of the Aboriginal culture, which was largely undocumented at that point of history.

As the two cultures mixed together, a thoroughly unique form of art was developed. The symbolism of tribal works was mixed with the realistic representations of European artwork, creating a fascinating hybrid of old and new. This mix, combined with the Australian's interest in artistic endeavors such as music and dance, have served to make the Australian art market uncommonly prepared to influence modern artists.

For consumers, Australian art is used to add textures and patterns to their decor that might not be available in many other contemporary pieces. However, usually these unique works of art are better suited to accent already existing decorative patterns rather than being a centerpiece. Decorators who are interested in a modern look will find plenty to appreciate in the photography and paintings of Australian art, as would decorators interested in abstract or pop culture.
