Poplar Art

Despite its short life span the poplar tree has been a popular subject for many artists over the past 300 years. Both Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh did poplar art. Monet’s works include the Meadow with Poplars, The Poplars 1891, Poplars on the Banks of the Epte 1981, and Poplars on the Banks of the Epte, Autumn, 1981.

Vincent van Gogh’s piece of poplar artwork The Poplars of Saint-Remy is from a series of paintings that the artist did when he was a self-admitted patient at the Saint Paul Asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Province. He took great inspiration from the gardens that provided the backdrop for his work. The portrait itself has vivid imagery of a dark sky; it clearly shows the shape, texture and colors of the poplar tree and you can almost feel the artist’s emotions coming at you off of the canvas.

Monet’s Meadow with Poplars was painted in 1891 when he learnt that a row of poplars on the river Epte were due to be cut down. He paid for them to be left standing long enough for him to paint them and produced 23 different pieces of poplar canvases from the scene. Eleven of them show the same view at different times of the day during different weather conditions. A particular feature of this work is the combination of a strong surface pattern, showed by vigorous brushstrokes and a continuous zigzagging of the trees that lead off into the distance.

Other artists of poplar prints are Manassa Carme with the Golden Poplars, Paul Edmondson’s Poplar Grove I and Gustav Klimt’s The Large Poplar Tree III, 1903. All of these images are set against different backdrops, with a kaleidoscope of colors and beautiful scenery.
